My life ... and how JWD came to be - Part 1
by Simon ina few people have asked how jwd came about and what my own story is and while i've posted it in bits and bobs, i've never tried to tell it as a story so here goes .... living in suburbia.
i was born a jw to jw parents who had recently been missionaries / pioneers in ireland and taken literature into countries like spain when it was banned but who were now living in suburbia near to where they had both been brought up.
we lived in a new semi-detached house in a cul-de-sac at the bottom of a hill - fantastic for building go-carts and racing down !

Another survey from Lee
by Lady Lee inreading simon's post about how things used to be i started thinking about how the internet has changed things.
many believe the internet and the freedom of information it contains will be the undoing of the wts.. when i was a jw, there were a few dfings but maybe one a year or even less.
people drifted away but we really didn't pay a lot of attention unless it was a close friend.. in here we see new people coming in all the time.

- What year did you leave?
1991 and 1996
- How old were you when you left?
17 and 22
- Did the internet have anything to do with your decision to leave?
nope
- If you left before you got on the internet what reading did you do about the WTS or cults that helped you make your decision?
nothing
- What was the one most important reason that helped you decide to leave (even if the decision was made for you through a DFing).
Getting objective opinions from people outside the organization, I realized that the little world I had grown up in was little more than a cult to anyone with a rational mind and a little education.
- If you left and still thought it was "the truth" what helped you change your mind?
Didn't really think it was the truth, but two years ago I read Ray Franz's book - Crisis of Conscience. It put to rest any thoughts that they were anything more than a bunch of liars

Have You Renounced Everything Jehovah's Witnesses Believe In?
by minimus innow that you don't practice the religion, is it safe to say that you reject everything that you were taught??
?

I renounced everything everything the witnesses believe in, except gravity.
I tried to, but walked off a cliff and broke my legs anyway.
Actually I surprised that they do teach gravity and don't call it the 11th comandment or something. "Thou shall be attracted to the earth with an unseen force"

Were You Ever "Marked" or Shunned?
by minimus inhow many here either were "marked" or "shunned" in some way?

My parents disowned me the first time I left, but I was an angry rebellious teenager too.
They now claim it was because I was doing drugs (smoking pot on the weekends) and they were worried about me. They wouldn't let me in their house, literally turned their backs on me when I tried to talk to them and told me I was not their son any longer. Maybe it is just, but I thought it was a bit dramatic.

SanFranciscoJim - So what's the name of this book? If you don't want to post, send me a PM or point me to a link.
PopeOfEruke - Haven't heard of Roger Zelazny before, would you recommend the amber trilogy and what is it about.
I have dabbled in writing before, I have a bunch of abstracts or story outlines or whatever they are called written. Most of them are sci-fi-ish for lack of a better term. I am spread too thin though between all my other hobbies and probably will do nothing with them for years.

Did you ever save anyones life?
by dh inif so, was it a stranger or was it someone you knew, and how did the relationship develop afterward?
i did once, a friend who was drowning, after the incident the friendship totally deteriorated and now whenever i think about it, i wonder why i bothered, it's difficult watching someone drown, especially when they shout your name instead of help.
anyway, anyone got any experiences to share?.

I was tubing ( riding those big tire innertubes) down a river in new york one summer and saw this young girl stuck in her tube and being pushed under the water by an overhanging tree. I hopped out of my and swam to her to untangle her. After a minute or two she got her breath back and was off down the river again. I don't know if I saved her life, someone would have helped her eventually, but her family was glad I was there.
